Bubble Agreement with Qatar: A Step towards Reviving Air Travel

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the air travel industry hard. With countries closing their borders and enforcing strict travel restrictions, international air travel has come to a halt. However, with the development of vaccines and the release of guidelines for safe travel, many countries are now looking to revive their air travel industry. One such initiative is the bubble agreement with Qatar.

What is a Bubble Agreement?

A bubble agreement, also known as a travel corridor, is a bilateral agreement between two countries that allows travel between them without the need for quarantine. The agreement is based on the premise that both countries have COVID-19 under control, and travelers entering or leaving the country pose no risk to public health.

Bubble Agreement with Qatar

In January 2021, the Indian government signed a bubble agreement with Qatar, allowing airlines from both countries to operate a specified number of flights on certain routes. The agreement was made in light of the growing demand for air travel between Qatar and India, as many Indian nationals and residents were stranded in Qatar due to the pandemic.

Under the bubble agreement, Qatar Airways and Indian airlines (Air India, IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet) are allowed to operate a limited number of flights between Doha and 13 Indian cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Thiruvananthapuram.

The agreement allows eligible passengers to travel without the need for quarantine if they have a negative COVID-19 test result taken 72 hours before departure. Passengers will also be required to do another test upon arrival in the respective countries.

Benefits of the Bubble Agreement

The bubble agreement with Qatar is a positive step towards reviving air travel. It allows for the safe resumption of flights between the two countries, thereby providing a much-needed boost to the aviation industry.

Furthermore, the agreement will benefit the Indian diaspora in Qatar who have been stranded in the country due to the pandemic. It will also facilitate the travel of Qatari citizens and residents to India for business or leisure purposes.

Conclusion

The bubble agreement with Qatar is a welcome move in the right direction. It provides a template for other countries to follow and offers hope for the aviation industry. However, it is essential to continue to adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure the continued safe resumption of air travel.
